History of the School
Holy Family is a Roman Catholic, parish elementary school serving grades Preschool through eight. It is Middle States accredited and adheres to the standards of the Diocese of Trenton and the State of New Jersey. The school exists to provide Catholic education aimed at the development of the whole person. It strives to promote academic excellence and spiritual development while affirming its motto:
"Faith - Family - Future"
Holy Family School accepts children of all races, and creeds.
In 1958 Reverend Joseph Fox, pastor, purchased an eighteen-acre tract of land on Highway 36, Hazlet, across the street from the church with the intention of building a school. In November 28, 1965 ground was broken for the school building. In September 1966, due to the fact that the school building was not yet completed, grades one and two were held in the church hall, with an enrollment of forty children. The school building was completed in 1967 and was occupied by grades one through four. In November, His Excellency, the most Reverend George W. Ahr, Bishop of Trenton, officiated at the laying of the corner stone, blessing, and dedication of Holy Family School. Each year additional grades were added. In 1972 the first graduation took place. In January 1974 a Pre-School and a Kindergarten class were added. At the present time the school has sixteen classrooms, a pre-school classroom, a library and a full computer lab with 31 stations, a fully equipped kitchen, gymnasium, large sports field, and a spacious cafeteria. In September 2007, The Little Crusaders - a preschool program for three year olds - will open.
A variety of religious communities administered the school from its beginning until 2006: The School Sisters of Notre Dame 1966 - 1972; Sisters of Charity - 1973; the Carmelite Sisters of St. Teresa 1973 - 1983; the Sisters of Mercy 1983 -2004; Sisters of the Resurrection 2004-2006. We honor the historic presence of these religious communities and draw on their charisms. Currently the school is under lay administration with Mrs. Jacqueline G. Kraus as principal.
